APAC Regional Operational Risk Oversight Director

About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking a Director to lead our Asia Pacific (APAC) team of Operational Risk professionals. The APAC Operational Risk Business Oversight Director role is a leadership role with direct relationship management and oversight responsibilities with respect to Lines of Business and Enterprise functions operating in the APAC region. The role requires specific subject matter expertise on operational risk frameworks and program expectations and a strong working knowledge of business and support functions active in the APAC region. In this capacity, this role reviews and challenges significant front line operational risk program execution across Line of Business, Function and Operational Risk Level 2 Type coverage (including but not limited to technology, information security, human capital, third party risk, human capital risk and transaction processing and execution, among others), and develop through oversight activities a detailed understanding of business strategy, customer base, products and services and other relevant industry issues, frameworks and emerging risks. The role will assist leadership with strategy development, be a key driver in execution of the work of the function, and also serve as key contact for business partners and staff. The APAC Operational Risk Oversight Director will be a member of the International Operational Risk Oversight management team, with reporting line to the International Head of Operational Risk and locally to the Regional Chief Risk Officer.


In this role, you will:

  • Provide vision and set direction for the APAC ORBO team to achieve long-term strategic objectives that impact organization and management across functions
  • Manage the development, implementation, and monitoring of a risk-based program which leverages Enterprise Operational Risk policies, programs and execution routines across the APAC Lines of Business and functions to identify, assess, and mitigate operational risk that arise from inadequate or failed internal processes, people, systems, or external events
  • Oversee and challenge Americas Lines of Business and Enterprise Functions across all ORBO-owned execution routines
  • Perform independent risk assessment of the Lines of Business and Enterprise Functions and Level 2 Risk Types, inclusive of emerging risks
  • Review and challenge of Line of Business and Enterprise Functions’ issues, events, losses, risk acceptances and new business initiatives
  • Use subject matter expertise and industry knowledge to provide independent oversight and credible challenge to the Line of Business’ operational risk management activities
  • Direct engagement with Control Executive, business management and Independent Risk teams to promote a strong operational risk culture
  • Active engagement in key Line of Business and regional risk governance inclusive of strategic planning sessions, governance committees and business reviews
  • Oversee and challenge Lines of Business and Enterprise Functions frontline operational risk management across the lifecycle (plan, identify & assess, control & mitigate, test & validate, monitor & report)
  • Strategically support the International Operational Risk Business Oversight Leader with the performance of an independent operational risk assessment of frontline activities, inlcusive of emerging risks
  • Evaluate cross-program and cross-business risks, issues and initiatives to identify opportunities and best practices to influence stronger risk management practices by the Lines of Business and Enterprise Functions
  • Active engagement with IRM teams supporting various risk types to ensure appropriate alignment and prioritization
  • Identify and escalate to frontline and Independent Risk Management any conflicts between risk management results and expected business outcomes
  • Influence appropriate risk management prioritisation by the frontline to enable the business to meet strategic objectives, while meeting operational risk program expectations
  • Develop and deliver oversight content summarising results of independent risk management activities (including but not limited to outputs from IORA, SOOR, and related operational risk reporting as well as credible challenge of business self assessment processes within the region)
  • In addition to these activities, employees are required to carry out such other duties as may reasonably be required.


Required Qualifications, International:

  • Proven experience in non-financial risk management (includes Operational Risk, Compliance, Audit or the management of a process or business with accountability for Operational Risk or Compliance)
  • Extensive industry experience (10+ years) in financial services
  • Extensive experience of line management (10+ years)
  • Extensive experience (10+ years) of direct execution of major operational risk programs companywide or lines of businesses with significant risk and multiple, complex regulatory environments


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in a front line risk management role, for example business control or support functions control (eg Finance, Operations)
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to interact with colleagues across all levels of the organisation, up to regional C-Suite and Enterprise Operational Risk leadership team
  • Ability to articulate complex concepts in a clear and concise manner
  • Strong strategic and conceptual thinking skills
  • Leadership skills including the ability to influence effectively in a matrix environment
  • Proven ability to scope, manage and execute complex risk management initiatives with high quality and timely delivery
  • Experience providing written and oral reporting and updates to senior-level management

Other desired qualifications/experience:

  • Meaningful knowledge of enterprise risk management frameworks, such as: risk identification & assessment (including execution and/or oversight of Risk & Control Self-Assessment), risk event measurement, risk appetite and strategy, risk-related decisions, processes and controls, risk analytics and governance and reporting
  • Strong understanding of a corporate risk function, business operations, processes, products and customer interactions in respect of how they manifest operational risk
  • Strategic leadership skills to drive alignment across stakeholder groups
  • Flexibility and business acumen to navigate a complex, highly matrixed organisation


Job Expectations:

  • Provide regional Line of Business and Enterprise Functions insights to IRM Risk Programs as needed
  • Build and sustain a strong risk culture including a balanced approach through working in collaboration with all lines of defence across the organisation
  • Manage allocation of people and financial resources relating to ORBO activities within the region
  • Deputise for the International Head of Operational Risk as needed
  • Uphold Wells Fargo Expectations
