Lead Counsel - Resiliency and Technology

About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking a Lead Counsel in the Technology, Digital and Innovation (TDI) Section within the Enterprise Functions Division of the Legal Department.  For additional information on this line of business, refer to the external Careers Site at

In this role you will:

  • This Lead Counsel will provide primary support for Enterprise Business Resiliency, inclusive of incident communications, and technology projects and initiatives as assigned. 
  • Work with and advise incident managers, business continuity and disaster recovery teams, corporate communications, IT professionals, technologists, risk and control management, and privacy and data security professionals on compliance with U.S. federal, state, and global laws related to global and enterprise resiliency and disaster recovery.
  • Provide advice related to third-party service providers and their resiliency obligations
  • Provide legal advice and support for regulatory supervisory activities and related communications with regulators and examiners
  • Provide strategic thought leadership for business continuity, resiliency, and disaster recovery
  • Frequently interface and collaborate with Legal counterparts in Technology, Corporate Properties Group, Security, Corporate Risk, Regulatory Relations, Employment and line of business legal stakeholders. 
  • Provides guidance to senior management on complex legal and regulatory matters with significant impact on business initiatives, strategy, and performance
  • Assess legal risk associated with all risk types and develops strategies for reducing legal exposure.
  • Lead analysis of and response to legal, regulatory, reputational, compliance, and policy matters within area of expertise
  • Identify and analyze complex legal issues, develop conclusions, and make recommendations for issue resolution
  • Serve as the primary legal contact for assigned clients
  • Be skilled with gathering information in a fast paced business environment, understanding business needs and goals, detecting legal issues and obstacles, identifying legal solutions and alternatives, and succinctly and competently counseling and communicating with technology professionals and managers regarding legal risks, solutions, and alternatives.
  • Collaborate within the department and across business and staff functions to address legal and risk issues in a manner consistent with the best interests of Wells Fargo.
  • Provide direction, guidance, training and resources to paralegals and or applicable relevant support staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of law experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
  • Active State Bar Membership

Desired Qualifications:

  • Prior in-house experience at a large financial firm, technology company or experience at a regulatory agency is preferred, but law firm experience also will be given consideration
  • Experience with U.S. and global legal, regulatory, compliance, and industry best practices relating to technology resiliency, business continuity and disaster recovery, including knowledge of FFIEC IT handbooks, Interagency White Paper on Sound Practices to Strengthen the Resilience of the U.S. Financial System, European Union Digital Operational Resilience Act, other regulatory risk management guidance, and industry best practices. 
  • Direct and substantial experience advising technology companies or financial institutions in technology resiliency, business continuity planning and disaster recovery, and incident response in large multinational data-center environments.
  • Familiarity with information security and privacy laws and standards.
  • Experience in effective engagement with technology leaders, senior management, risk, compliance and audit professionals, and external regulators.
  • Familiarity with industry frameworks for managing technology and information security and related risk (e.g., NIST, ISO 27001, COBIT)
  • Technical background or proven track record working with technology, including familiarity with server and technology platforms, database management, data center management, IT governance, IT asset management, and incident management (experience alone in preparing or negotiating IT contracts is not sufficient)
  • Prior experience in effective engagement with senior leaders (senior management, risk, compliance and audit professionals, and external regulators) in a global environment. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills that gain the trust and confidence of technical, legal, risk, compliance and business audiences
  • Effective in building partnerships, functioning well with project teams, and working for the success of the team.

Job Expectations:

  • Flexibility to be on call beyond normal working hours as needed for incident response
  • Ability to travel up to 5% of the time
  • Willingness to work on-site at stated location on the job opening
  • Ability to work a hybrid schedule, in office at least 3 days a week

Pay Range

$144,400.00 - $300,000.00 Annual
