The Chief Operating Office (COO) is responsible for delivering a more consistent approach to business operations across Wells Fargo, strengthening the company’s risk and control infrastructure, and delivering effective and efficient enterprise services to employees and customers.
The COO group includes the head of Operations, who is jointly responsible for line of business operations with each of the five LOB CEOs. Operations functions include contact center operations, client servicing support, money movements within our businesses, lending operations, and other functions.
The COO group also includes a number of teams dedicated to strengthening Wells Fargo’s risk and control infrastructure. These include the Control Executive team; Regulatory and Policy Affairs; Enterprise Customer Excellence; Sales Practices Oversight and Management; and Strategic Execution and Operations.

The Position: 
The Head of Payments Operational Risk Business Oversight  is responsible for performing oversight of the Global Payment Operations function within the Wells Fargo Chief Operating Office (COO). 

This role will oversee and challenge the front line across all operational risk routines, including: plan, identify and assess, control and mitigate, monitor and report, test and validate; escalating issues and concerns to appropriate decision-making body. The role also continuously reviews and challenges the alignment of risk management results and expected functional outcomes 

This role will serve as the key point of contact for Independent Risk Management and Front-Line COO leadership and Control Executive leaders for all matters pertaining to oversight of the noted COO organization. The role will also manage a team of multiple levels that oversees complex business functions across several legal entities, multiple product lines and distribution channels internally, and payment networks across the financial services industry externally. 

The Candidate:

  • Use subject matter expertise and industry knowledge to provide independent oversight and credible challenge to the Line of Business’s operational risk management activities 
  • Active engagement in key front-line governance routines inclusive of strategic planning sessions, governance committees and business reviews
  • Provide perspective for Independent Risk Assessment of the COO, and present results to front line executives
  • Actively lead independent payments risk oversight and challenge, ensuring coordinated and aggregate perspective of payments risk across the enterprise.
  • Review and challenge risk acceptances, issue remediation, losses, testing deferrals and front-line metrics.
  • Identify and escalate to senior leadership conflicts with risk management results and expected business outcomes
  • Active, routine engagement with senior Independent Risk Management leaders to ensure information sharing across business aligned and risk aligned teams
  • Integrate payments regulatory and industry requirements and standards, leading interpretations and proactive enhancement of Wells Fargo payments risk practices.
  • Develop and deliver content to senior business, Independent Risk, Internal Audit and regulatory leaders summarizing the key operational risks generated by the respective organizations.
  • Manage consistent and recurring communications with regulators and audit, increasing transparency, buy in, and building credibility.
  • Direct engagement with the Control Executive teams, Business Heads and Independent Risk leaders to promote a strong operational risk culture
  • Evaluate cross-program and cross-group analytics to identify opportunities and best practices to influence stronger risk management practices by the business

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in risk management (includes compliance, financial crimes, operational risk, audit, legal, credit risk, market risk, IT systems security, business process management) or 10+ years of financial services industry experience, of which 7+ years must include direct experience in risk management
  • 7+ years of management experience

Other Desired Qualifications
  • Expert understanding of risk management, with specific experience in payments risk within financial institutions
  • Strong knowledge of the financial services industry, products, and regulatory environment
  • Experience building effective risk oversight programs.
  • Proven ability to develop and deploy a strategy, anticipating and proactively addressing challenges. Effective leadership ability to drive successful execution of strategic plans; ability to plan, prioritize and set goals. Must possess a sense of urgency about exceeding the objectives of the role 
  • Ability to influence senior and executive partners
  • Experience leading large-scale enterprise-wide initiatives
  • Transformational leadership experience
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to articulate complex concepts in a clear manner
  • Organizational courage and willingness to make tough, informed decisions and thoughtfully share independent perspectives

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, coupled with an ability to translate ambiguous ideas/issues into well-defined plans/solutions with a track-record for delivering results
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment, lead through adversity, and adjust to changing priorities 
  • Leadership, rooted in integrity. Ability to create an environment where the team members feel included, valued, and supported to do work that energizes them.
  • A BS/BA degree equivalent or higher 
  • Meaningful knowledge across enterprise risk management framework to drive connectivity, including best practices.
  • Strong interpersonal, influencing, and communications skills with an ability to interact effectively with stakeholders at all levels, and regulators, to include virtual, matrixed leadership experience and the ability to effectively manage and build relationships across lines of defense. 
  • Ability to articulate complex concepts in a clear manner
  • Organizational courage and willingness to make tough, informed decisions and thoughtfully share independent perspectives 
  • Proven leadership skills to drive alignment across stakeholder groups to develop and deliver repeatable end to end risk management solutions and results. 
  • Flexibility and business savvy to navigate a complex, highly-matrixed organization.
