About this role:
Wells Fargo is seeking an Artificial Intelligence Solutions Director to lead the team that turns artificial intelligence opportunities into working capabilities for payments. This role sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, data, payments, liquidity, and digital currencies. It is accountable for moving the organization beyond experimentation by building solutions that solve meaningful business problems, operate reliably in production, and deliver measurable value.
The team operates in a forward deployed model. Engineers and solution leads embed directly with the businesses they support, work alongside product, operations, data, and technology partners to understand problems first-hand, and design and deliver solutions with them. This Director will set the standard for that model by building the team, defining how it engages, establishing the technical and delivery expectations, and maintaining accountability for both speed and production quality.
This is a transformational leadership role. We are looking for a leader with a growth mindset who has built and led technical teams close to the business, can operate effectively through ambiguity and rapid iteration, and is motivated by changing how work gets done rather than managing the current state.
In this role, you will:
Build, lead, and develop a team of forward deployed engineers and solution leads who work directly with payments businesses to identify, design, and deliver artificial intelligence solutions
Define and lead the artificial intelligence solutions roadmap for payments, liquidity, and digital currencies, aligning near-term delivery with longer-term platform and capability investments
Establish the team's engagement model, including how opportunities are identified, evaluated, scoped, prioritized, staffed, delivered, and transitioned into production
Own a portfolio of concurrent artificial intelligence initiatives and make clear investment, sequencing, resource, and delivery decisions across the portfolio
Set technical and delivery direction across generative artificial intelligence, agentic solutions, applied machine learning, natural language processing, and intelligent automation
Ensure solutions move from prototype to production with appropriate engineering quality, evaluation, monitoring, documentation, human-in-the-loop design, model risk practices, and data protection controls
Partner with business, product, technology, data, operations, risk, and control leaders to secure sponsorship, resolve obstacles, and ensure delivered solutions are adopted and sustained
Translate artificial intelligence capabilities, limitations, risks, and technical tradeoffs into clear business outcomes and investment decisions for senior leadership
Establish reusable standards, reference implementations, evaluation frameworks, delivery patterns, and controls that improve the speed and consistency of future engagements
Evaluate external capabilities and market developments to determine where the organization should build, buy, or partner
Manage people and financial resources for Artificial Intelligence Solutions to ensure delivery commitments and strategic objectives are met
Develop leaders and technical talent while building a culture of accountability, collaboration, engineering quality, rapid learning, and responsible innovation
Required Qualifications:
10+ years of Artificial Intelligence solutions experience, or equivalent experience demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
4+ years of management or leadership experience
Desired Qualifications:
Experience leading teams of forward deployed engineers, solution engineers, artificial intelligence engineers, or a comparable embedded technical delivery function that works directly with business teams
Track record of building and scaling a technical team into an established enterprise capability, including hiring, developing, organizing, and retaining engineering talent
Demonstrated ability to manage a portfolio of concurrent delivery engagements, make prioritization and resource decisions, and maintain accountability for outcomes
Hands-on background in software engineering, data engineering, applied machine learning, or artificial intelligence solution delivery sufficient to set technical direction and maintain a strong quality bar
Experience taking generative artificial intelligence and agentic solutions into production in an enterprise environment, including evaluation, monitoring, human-in-the-loop design, model risk, data protection, and operational support considerations
Working knowledge of modern cloud and data platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud, and experience integrating artificial intelligence into enterprise systems through APIs or event-driven architectures
Experience establishing reusable engineering patterns, delivery methods, evaluation frameworks, and governance practices for an artificial intelligence organization
Knowledge of payments, liquidity, transaction banking, digital currencies, or digital assets, including familiarity with the operational workflows artificial intelligence can improve
Ability to communicate credibly with engineers, senior executives, business leaders, and risk and control partners, and to explain technical tradeoffs in business terms
Management consulting, client-facing delivery, or comparable experience leading complex transformation within a large institution
Demonstrated success developing leaders, influencing across organizational boundaries, and building accountability in a multidisciplinary delivery environment
Job Expectations:
Operate as a transformational leader by setting a clear agenda, building the team and operating model to deliver it, and maintaining a high bar for speed, quality, and measurable outcomes
Bring a growth mindset and develop it across the team as artificial intelligence technologies, delivery practices, and the payments landscape continue to evolve
Spend meaningful time with the businesses the team supports; proximity to users, workflows, and operational problems is central to the forward deployed model
Balance rapid delivery and experimentation with the risk, control, compliance, security, and production standards expected of the bank
Maintain clear accountability for the portfolio roadmap, investment priorities, team capacity, delivery dependencies, adoption, and sustained business value
