About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking a highly capable and people-oriented Database Engineering Manager to lead the Oracle Server Database Operations team. This role is critical to ensuring the stability, performance, and availability of our high-volume, business-critical database environments. The candidate must bring deep technical expertise in Oracle Database administration skill with strong Exadata knowledge, combined with proven leadership and team management skills. This role will be responsible for driving operational excellence, mentoring a team of experienced database engineers, and collaborating with other technology teams to support business needs.

In this role, you will:

1. Leadership & People Management

  • Supervise, coach, and mentor database engineers to deliver high-quality capabilities using modern technology.
  • Lead and manage database engineering teams supporting multiple Lines of Business (LOBs)
  • Drive talent strategy, including hiring, mentoring, and performance management
  • Build high-performing teams aligned to enterprise technology goals
  • Participate actively in IOR leadership and cross-functional forums (e.g., Change and Consultations , Community of Practice and etc.)
  • Hire, build, and develop teams with skills required for innovative database solutions.
  • Partner with product owners and managers to guide technical solutions and create product roadmaps for database platforms.
  • Provide oversight and guidance on team structures and engineering practices.
  • Drive or assist with resolution of database technology roadblocks, manage development cycles, and uphold security standards.
  • Provide career development and performance management for database engineers and managers.
  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving, technical leadership, and communication skills.
  • Partner with architects and experienced engineers to incorporate technical strategies for database systems.
  • Foster a culture of servant leadership, continuous learning, experimentation, and improvement.
  • Evaluate the database configuration and processes according to established policies and procedures of the organization
  • Identify and recommend opportunities for process improvement and risk control development
  • Establish performance standards, evaluate performance, train and mentor team
  • Develop in policies and procedures and training materials
  • Make decisions and resolve issues regarding objectives and operations of the fleet assets in the database management area to meet business objectives
  • Interpret and develop policies and procedures for functions with low to moderate complexity within scope of responsibility
  • Collaborate and influence all levels of professionals including more experienced managers
  • Lead team to achieve objectives
  • Manage allocation of people and financial resources for Database Management
  • Mentor and guide talent development of direct reports and assist in hiring talent

2. Operational & Service Delivery Management

  • Own end-to-end database Operations service delivery (run, maintain, and optimize)
  • Ensure high availability and reliability through incident management and problem resolution
  • Lead major incident response, RCA execution, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Manage database lifecycle: maintenance, upgrades, decommissioning.

3. Technology Strategy & Architecture

  • Partner with IOR leadership to define and execute database technology strategy
  • Contribute to architectural decisions, standards, and engineering practices
  • Drive adoption of modern technologies:
    • Cloud-native database platforms
    • Virtualization and containerization
    • Multi/hybrid cloud models.

4. Programs & Engineering Execution

  • Lead enterprise-wide programs such as:
    • Operational retrospective
    • Database upgrades & patching
    • Technology refresh initiatives (e.g., DCMS)
    • Migration programs (e.g., Oracle → MongoDB/Postgres/Yugabyte)
  • Ensure automation, standardization, and engineering efficiency across platforms.

5. Resiliency, Risk & Compliance

  • Collaborate with TRDR (Technology Resiliency & Disaster Recovery) teams to ensure:
    • Business Continuity Planning (BCP)
    • RTO/RPO adherence
  • Ensure database compliance with enterprise policies, audit requirements, and inventory controls

6. Stakeholder & Business Engagement

  • Partner with application teams, CIO organizations, and business stakeholders
  • Understand business priorities and align database capabilities accordingly
  • Provide leadership communication on risks, performance, and strategic initiatives.

7. Vendor & Financial Management

  • Manage relationships with database vendors (Oracle, PostgreSQL, etc.)
  • Optimize licensing, cost, and utilization of database infrastructure
  • Support budget planning and financial governance

8. Continuous Improvement & Operational Excellence

  • Drive automation and reduction of manual effort
  • Lead initiatives to improve stability, reduce incidents, and enhance performance
  • Promote best practices via communities of practice and engineering standards.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of Database Management experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education

  • 2+ years of Leadership experience


Desired Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in database administration, with at least 4+ years in a leadership or managerial role
  • Deep expertise in Oracle Exadata technologies, including HA/DR solutions
  • Proven experience managing 24x7 production environments with mission-critical databases
  • Strong understanding of performance tuning, monitoring, and capacity planning
  • Excellent people management skills with experience in coaching, team development, and performance management
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to collaborate with application and infrastructure teams

Technical Competencies

  • Deep expertise in RDBMS platforms (Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, etc.)
  • Strong knowledge of: Performance tuning, Database architecture & High availability and DR solutions
  • Experience in cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP)

Leadership Competencies

  • Strategic thinking and execution alignment
  • Strong stakeholder management and influence
  • Ability to lead global, distributed teams

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

  • Experience in large-scale financial services environments
  • Exposure to regulatory and audit frameworks

Expected to have past hands-on experience in SQL Server, PostgreSQL EDB and MongoDB, alongside Oracle version 12 and above as primary skill-set.
