Principal Engineer Site Reliability Engineering

Wells Fargo is seeking a highly influential Principal Engineer to lead the transformation of observability, automation, and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices supporting critical Card and Home Lending servicing platforms. This is a unique opportunity to drive engineering excellence across highly visible systems that serve millions of customers and power essential engagement channels across the enterprise.

In this role, you'll operate at the intersection of technology strategy and execution, partnering with senior engineering leaders, platform teams, data engineers, and global stakeholders to modernize operational capabilities, strengthen system resilience, and accelerate issue detection and recovery. You'll have the autonomy to shape architectural direction, champion innovative reliability solutions, and establish engineering standards that influence an entire technology organization.

In this role, you will: 

  • Act as an advisor to leadership to develop or influence applications, network, information security, database, operating systems, or web technologies for highly complex business and technical needs across multiple groups. 

  • Lead the strategy and resolution of highly complex and unique challenges requiring in-depth evaluation across multiple areas or the enterprise, delivering solutions that are long-term, large-scale and require vision, creativity, innovation, advanced analytical and inductive thinking. 

  • Translate advanced technology experience, an in-depth knowledge of the organizations tactical and strategic business objectives, the enterprise technological environment, the organization structure, and strategic technological opportunities and requirements into technical engineering solutions.

  • Provide vision, direction and expertise to leadership on implementing innovative and significant business solutions. 

  • Maintain knowledge of industry best practices and new technologies and recommends innovations that enhance operations or provide a competitive advantage to the organization. 

  • Strategically engage with all levels of professionals and managers across the enterprise and serve as an expert advisor to leadership. 

 
Required Qualifications: 

  • 7+ years of Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education. 

  • 5+ years designing and implementing observability solutions (e.g., Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry). 

  • 3+ years of experience with cloud and container platforms (Kubernetes, OpenShift). 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Experience with databases (Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MongoDB) and strong SQL skills. 

  • Familiarity with Java-based applications and performance monitoring (JVM metrics, heap/thread analysis). 

  • Knowledge of data governance and compliance frameworks. 

  • Experience troubleshooting OS-level and infrastructure-related issues. 

  • Experience supporting both commercial off-the-shelf and custom-built applications. 

  • Strong analytical mindset with a focus on continuous improvement. 

  • Experience working in Agile or Kanban environments. 

  • Maintain strong visibility into risks, controls, and platform health across Marketing Technology. 

  • Ensure observability coverage supports risk management and compliance requirements. 

  • Partner with engineering, product, and vendor teams to maintain a stable and scalable ecosystem. 

  • Drive continuous improvement in monitoring, automation, and operational practices.

Pay Range
 

Reflected is the base pay range offered for this position. Pay may vary depending on factors including but not limited to demonstrated examples of prior performance, skills, experience, or work location. Employees may also be eligible for incentive opportunities.

$159,000.00 - $254,000.00
