About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking a Software Engineering Manager to lead engineering delivery within the Retail Services ecosystem—an environment characterized by high transaction volumes, deep upstream and downstream integrations, and stringent regulatory requirements.

This role requires a strong engineering leader who can operate at the intersection of system reliability, platform modernization, and people leadership. You will provide end-to-end ownership of engineering execution, ensuring resilience, scalability, and disciplined evolution of critical systems while navigating concurrent modernization initiatives and ongoing production demands.

The ideal candidate brings a hands-on leadership approach, champions an AI-first engineering mindset, and fosters a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and operational excellence. You will be responsible for building high-performing teams, strengthening engineering capabilities, and enabling sustainable delivery at scale in a complex, mission-critical environment.

In this role, you will:

  • Manage, coach, and develop a team of individual contributor engineer roles with low to moderate complexity and less experienced managers who are responsible for building high quality capabilities with modern technology
  • Ensure adherence to the Banking Platform Architecture, and meeting non-functional requirements with each release
  • Engage with architects and experienced engineers to incorporate Wells Fargo Technology technical strategies, while understanding next generation domain architecture to enable application migration paths to target architecture; for example, cloud readiness, application modernization and data strategy
  • Function as the technical representative for the product during cross-team collaborative efforts and planning
  • Identify and recommend opportunities for driving resolution of technology roadblocks including code, build and deployment while also managing overall software development cycle and security standards
  • Act as an escalation partner for scrum masters and the teams to make decisions and help remove impediments, obstacles, and friction while encouraging constant learning, experimentation, and continual improvement culture
  • Build engineering skills side-by-side in the codebase, conduct peer reviews to evaluate quality and solution alignment to technical direction, and guide design, as needed
  • Interpret, develop, and ensure security, stability, and scalability within functions of technology with low to moderate complexity, as well as identify, manage and mitigate technology and enterprise risk
  • Collaborate and consult with the Product Managers/Product Owners to drive user satisfaction, influence technology requirements and priorities in the product roadmap, promote innovative and intelligent solutions, generate corporate value and articulate technical strategy while being a solid advocate of agile and DevOps practices
  • Interact directly with third party vendors and technology service providers
  • Manage allocation of people and financial resources for technology engineering including career development and performance management for engineers and managers on the team
  • Hire, mentor and guide talent development of direct reports to build the skills required to effectively design and deliver innovative solutions for the supported product areas/products

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of Software Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
  • 2+ years of Leadership experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong experience leading engineering teams in high-scale, distributed, and highly regulated environments (e.g., banking, financial services, or similar domains)
  • Java Full stack Development Experience
  • Demonstrated ability to drive modernization initiatives including cloud adoption, microservices architecture, and legacy transformation
  • Experience with AI-assisted development practices and evangelizing AI-first engineering culture (e.g., GitHub Copilot, automation, intelligent tooling)
  • Proven track record of improving system reliability, observability, and production stability in complex ecosystems
  • Strong understanding of DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, and SRE principles
  • Experience managing large-scale transactional systems and integration-heavy platforms
  • Ability to influence and collaborate across architecture, product, and enterprise technology teams
  • Strong knowledge of security, regulatory compliance, and risk management frameworks in enterprise environments
  • Excellent people leadership skills, with a focus on coaching, mentoring, succession planning, and talent development
  • Experience driving engineering productivity through automation, tooling, and process improvements
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate technical strategy to executive and non-technical stakeholders

Job Expectations:

  • Lead engineering execution for Retail Services applications, ensuring high availability, performance, and resilience
  • Drive adoption of modern engineering practices, including AI-assisted development, automation, and data-driven decision-making
  • Balance business-as-usual (BAU) priorities with strategic transformation initiatives such as cloud migration and platform modernization
  • Establish and enforce engineering governance, standards, and best practices across the team
  • Partner closely with product, architecture, and enterprise technology teams to align on roadmap priorities and technical direction
  • Proactively identify and mitigate systemic risks, production issues, and scalability challenges
  • Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement within the engineering organization
  • Enable teams to operate effectively in a highly regulated environment with strong focus on compliance, audit readiness, and secure development practices
  • Drive talent strategy, including hiring, retention, upskilling, and career progression for engineers and emerging leaders
  • Continuously improve developer experience, engineering velocity, and operational efficiency through tooling and process innovation
